Recommendations to neophyte
Very few of us grew up with Japanese bonsai trees (or other Asian versions of). But there is a pivot point in our journeys where our curiosity and admiration for a miniature tree moves us to acquire our first tree or research leading to our first tree. Some benefited by seeing some in person at a garden, someone’s yard, or in media. Some are gifted a small tree, which may survive our inexperience or not. For me the impetus was an ugly roadside truck selling junipers, Fukien Tea, and Chinese Elms.
If one’s first tree leads to your second, and so on—a common question is “what is the right tree for me?”
This may include both species, age, but essentially “what should I invest in, given my novice caution?” I cannot say what is best or right, but my first-hand navigation of this may help other neophytes. I recommend finding a Club community or more experienced practitioner, and survey the same questions to reflect on.
Have at least one or two mature Bonsai trees to enjoy.
Mine was a Fukien Tea (tropical, indoor, and resilient—but slow growing) $35
My second tree (from the same roadside truck) was a larger, beautiful Chinese Elm. It was a little sickly, a large pot, and he was motivated to sell. $100.
