Conifer Curious

In retrospect, my yard may not be ideal for most conifers. Observation that my spruce are not vigorous—not sickly, just not vigorous. Water or soil? Japanese Black Pines are okay but candles are not long as some experience. Candle-envy.

Not sure what to try next or if I’m just whining.
