Art, Social Justice, and Democracy
I’m so grateful to participate in an online class, offered by the Pacific School of Religion. The title “Art, Social Justice, and Democracy” caught my attention, reacting in a Pavlovian way. Moderated by Jeff Chang, author of “It’s Gon’ Be Alright” and a host of artists/ poets/ activists.
The first class spoke of prophets and artists throughout history, playing a powerful role.
• Audre Lorde quote “Poetry [art] is the name of the nameless, so it can be thought…”.
• “Cultural change always precedes political change.”
• “Apocalypse”—revelation, disclosure, to lift the veil
Cultural Strategy was discussed to activate artists with directed purpose, and their primer is attached:
“As an introduction to key concepts and ideas about Cultural Strategy, this primer pulls together various strands of thought as they relate to this emergent field. This document is the first of two parts; the second is a comprehensive case study on Until We Are All Free, an art- and culture-based initiative on racial justice.”
