Ready, "Set", Go!

Crossing over between engineering and my personal artistic expressions, I have enjoyed supporting my girls’ school musical productions. Working with a set team and the director, we have created sets for the Lion King Jr, Aladdin Jr, and now High School Musical Jr (all thanks to Disney).

I’ve always had an interest in set design, and especially so as we have seen more musical productions with the family. Below are some snapshots to share the experience of constrained budgets, limited garage space, and creating after the kids go to sleep or with them on the few weekends leading up to the show. Another challenge is working with left over paint, or discounted “mistake” paints from Home Depot. But in the end, we have helped the student performers have a wonderful theatrical experience over the years.

What is in store for next year? A rotating stage? Or move into theatrical costume design? We will see.

If you are interested in volunteering in local school musical set design, or curious to see some of our work I have created a workbook to share online.
