Cosmic Bonsai Style—Laurent Darrieux

Laurent Darrieux has practiced bonsai for over 35 years, and trained as an artist. Following all of the traditional Japanese bonsai norms, he wanted to express himself creatively. This was rejected by most as non-traditional—never qualified for bonsai shows. So he conceived of creating bonsai on another planet, obeying different natural laws of gravity and sunlight.

  • Compacting everything (coils) then let it grow out, repeat

  • Never cuts roots, never cuts tips—until exhibition (2 yrs)—healthy & robust.  Plastic pot or wood grow box

  • Nearly fully defoliates for exhibition to show branchwork

  • Wire once a year, remove, scarification, wire the new growth/-no pruning.  

  • Can widen scarification repeatedly in a season

  • Does not care about inner branches or foilage die off—it shows best if all defoliation

  • Follows Japanese training, but breaks all the rules.  Does not care about taper, does not care about primary branches, does not care about wire-bite.
