Redwood Development—Deeg
SBBK Gordon Deeg advice
COAST REDWOOD
Healthy material. Thin out clusters to a select single branch, good angle and placement.
This prevents reverse taper or a bulging growth off the trunk is unsightly.
Select an apex that will have branches, even if lower than the current chop off the side.
Can have a top foilage about 5” taller than the current cut or Jin the top and develop a new side apex.
Remove thicker branches if no needles or branches rather grow a smaller branch correctly they will not back bud. But wait until a small branch emerges near the branch-trunk point.
Don’t remove circling roots, may lose taper at the base. Rather bury them higher to hide them.
One thinner circling root can be straightened out when repotting if flexible.
Do not cut roots entirely, but cut a notch below the soil and they will die slowly.
[JT recommended making notches and add rooting hormone, then add sphagnum and keep moist] stimulate new radial roots.
