Redwood Maintenance

Bonsaify & Jay

  • Great bonsai material but labor intensive

  • Pinch/snip back to 2 needles if strong and 4 needles if weaker. Stunts elongation.

  • In nature, Redwoods grow long branches then they droop.

  • Uses 22g copper wire for fine branching

  • After 2 months, repeat again

Repot in mid to late spring or fall, when the tree is active and the buds are swelling. Avoid repotting in the winter, when colder temperatures can make it harder for the roots to recover.

Expect to do a fair amount of root pruning each time you repot. Trimming older roots can promote new growth.

Use a well-draining, moisture-retentive soil that's slightly acidic (pH 5.5–6.0). Akadama soil is a good option because it meets the redwood's nutritional and water needs.
