Deciduous Defoliation

More mature trident maple that is in good health—recommended to fully defoliate (early Aug, or could be earlier). Will encourage ramification, smaller leaves and budding. [Val M, SBBK]

  • Defoliation is usually a spring summer process

  • Once the leaves are off….If it’s a total defoliation you can put tree into the sun.

  • A partial defoliation needs shelter to prevent the remaining leaves from burning.

  • Check the water usage for the tree by how fast the soil dries out.  <suggest to wait until dry or mostly dry, and notice how long it took? If it dries quickly that is good? Intake implies growth?>

  • You don’t have to stop fertilizer.
