Repotting 2.0

  • Recommend 50% akadama and 25% pumice and 25% lava. Think we did more pumice since it was late it the season.

  • Yeah that’s what Adam [Toth] suggested when I repotted mine. And make sure a bottom layer of bigger particle size of either akadama or pumice.

  • Used to use charcoal but I stopped buying it since I wasn’t sure how much of it was really helping. It wouldn’t hurt, but unsure how much it makes a difference.

  • I do liquid mycorrhizae every time  after I repot since it makes me feel better lol. But Adam [Toth] says it’s not necessary. Be careful using it on trees with deadwood near base since it’ll cause fungi to grow all over it and decay it.

  • Indirect sunlight for around a week and let pot dry as much as possible for species. I don’t do any fert until 2-3 weeks to not make tree work overtime while it’s recovering and focusing on growing roots.

  • The time you wait to fertilize depends too though. A more vigorous grower like Chinese elm or a redwood, I’d fertilize sooner and heavier cuz they’ll take any abuse.

  • [Blue Atlas Cedar/Jan 2025] Maybe wait a month to fertilize your cedar to be on the safe side. Or a really light fertilizer with low nitrogen.

  • Also keep in mind these cedars have lived their whole life under filtered light ! They will be stressed while adapting to full sun and new weather.
