Summer Readiness

Pulling back the curtain

  • While we were spared from the California 2024 heat wave (~110F regionally and 95F only minutes away), our bayside town was in the mid-90s.

  • But overall my shade cloth went up in late May to prepare for a week’s travel—but growth has not been vigorous.

  • Pulled back the top shade cloth and will watch the more sensitive maples to the lower shelf.

July progress

Cork bark elm is hardy, as this browned out with heat & underwatering. After removing brown leaves discovered new buds. Moved to shade and watered.

Redwood sun exposure

Some of my Redwood hardwood cuttings that were budding in spring, looked a little stressed or over heat exposed. Have kept in full sun and hydrated, but possibly too much sun. My healthy and more mature Redwood should be fine in the sun, but other ones still developing rootshave now been moved into a partial shade area and will be missed

Cork Bark Chinese Elm seedlings are hearty. This one had heat stress and browned out. When trimming off the dead leaves, new buds were awaiting their chance.

Late June progress

Redwoods continuing strong growth

Larch cuttings doing well

After a week away, the new maple had crispy leaves on the crown—defoliated and ensured watering to recover.

A cosmic styled willow dried up. Moved to a shady area and watered for recovery.

Follow up after a week away:

  • Daily drip line & misters, 5 min run time at 11am. Not everything gets automatically irrigated. House sitter watering by hand, every other day.

  • Maples and plants needing more watering fared very well seated in an Anderson Flat (poly liner, covered in a layer with crushed granite) for prolonged, slow drainage or available moisture if roots escape the pot.

  • Larch in full sun with drip thrived.

  • Redwoods did not enough watering.

  • Santa Rosa Plum continuing to grow and leaf out.

Preparing for June travels for a week, organized plants for timed irrigation. Drip lines and misters. Should run daily for 5 min.

50% shade cloth.

Golden Nursery in San Mateo had 8 lb bags of large pumice for $8.50 each; picked up 3 bags for winter Yamadori.
