Why Your Art College Admissions Essay Matters

Describe the medium that means the most to you as an artist. Be sure to explain how you learned this medium and what you love about it, as well as reflecting on why you think you are particularly drawn to this art.
Write an essay about a teacher or learning experience that has been especially meaningful to you in your development as an artist so far. What was it about this person or experience that meant so much? What did you learn, and how have you applied these lessons in your subsequent work?
Describe an artist whose work you admire deeply and find inspirational. Write about how you discovered this artist and what you love so much about her work. Describe how you take her inspiration to heart in your own work, and how her art has helped you look differently upon your own artistic process.
What is one significant challenge you have faced so far as an artist or as a student, or as a student artist? Describe the challenge and what you have done to try to overcome it. In this essay, you should also reflect on what you have learned from facing this challenge and how it has impacted your art and your sense of identity.
How do you balance your identity as an artist or art student with other aspects of your identity? Describe what makes this easy for you as well as what makes it challenging. Write about how you imagine this tension playing out as you continue pursuing your artistic and other goals, and how you see time at art college fitting into this plan.
Why do you want to go to this specific college? Write an essay describing why you think this art college is a good fit for you and what you most hope to get out of your time studying here. Describe how your personality, goals, and strengths would contribute to academic, artistic and overall campus life.
Tell the story of why and how you came to think of yourself as a serious artist. Were there particular moments, people, or interactions that influenced this aspect of your identity? Is it something you have thought about for a long time, or is it newer?
Define the concept of 'art' in your own terms. What do you think it means to study at an art college, as opposed to a liberal arts college or large university? How do you think your definition of art influences the work you do as well as the way you live your life.
